Profane sexuality in Viper GTS

6 June 2023

This post was originally made on Cohost as part of an attempt I made at writing hentai reviews. The project largely stalled out for various reasons, but I plan to return to it one day. In the mean time, here is my first review in the series.

๐Ÿ”ž This post discusses adult content matter of a sexual nature.

Folks, we're starting out with the big one. This is the number one hentai anime I consistently recommend to people. It's got everything I could ask for: Demon and angel girls, fun and engaging characters, magic and suspense, and some real heart too! Did I mention it was about devil girls? I may be a bit biased in my proclivities here.

It's also basically impossible to search for blindly any more, since search engines have begun erasing all negation operators from their services. Good luck searching for Viper GTS -Dodge any more; you're now stuck with a smattering of car ads amongst your pornography research.

It's all cars. Just cars.

Background

Viper GTS is based on the visual novel of the same name (and its prequel, Viper-V6), a part of the Viper anthology series. The visual novel was first released on the PC-98 before being ported to FM Towns and Windows PC. I have already narrowly avoided the temptation of diving headfirst into the PC-98 scene, and this has been one of the greater temptations. While looking up information about the releases on VNDB, I was deeply amused to discover that the RS re-release of the game apparently came with official branded tissues.1 Damn. I wish porn games still shipped with feelies. ๐Ÿฅบ

The OVA adaptation is in three parts, covering the contents of both Viper-V6 and Viper-GTS. It does so very seamlessly, and feels like a very complete story of its own rights. The adaptation was directed by Oobari Masami with animation directed by Hamazaki Ken'ichi, both artists with a pretty steady output of a variety of shows in fantasy and science-fiction works. Oobari Masami had worked on Transformers before he directed Bubblegum Crisis OVA 5 and 6, as well as the 1994 Fatal Fury OVAs. He is also the director on the Angel Blade OVAs, another hentai series I will be talking about at another time.

Hamazaki Ken'ichi is also credited for the character design of the OVA, which is interesting because it is definitely a fair bit different from the visual novel's style. Hamazaki Ken'ichi has a much more bountiful style, emphasizing facial expressions, curvier bodies, and more advanced magitech for the angels. This isn't to cast any shade on the original art, however. It is very stylistically different, and honestly I think there's a lot to love about both styles. The original game artwork has this much more subtle style, sleek with a silky touch and muted colours. The game's artist, Sasaki Masakatsu2 is accomplished in his own right, and beyond games worked on a number of anime3. Here's our protagonist, Carrera, in both the original game and the OVA adaptation.

Carrera is wearing a very vampiric looking cape, with a mischievous little smile and skulls around her neck.Carrera is wearing a skimpy skintight harness of some sort, with pasties over her nipples and retracted, angular bat wings. She is much bustier here.
PC-98 (left) vs. OVA (right)

Also I can't find an exact citation for this, but I think it's notable that all the characters and indeed the Viper series itself seems to be named after cars and car companies. I'm curious where this trend came from, considering Araki does a similar thing in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure by using band names.

Alright, so let's get into my feelings

There's a lot that I love in this one. Beyond having things that personally resonate with my devilish gender, I think the characters are really fun and have a good dynamic. There's also a really good sense of cosmology that really leaves me wishing for more. The anime adaptation was done in three twenty-five-minute (25m) OVAs, and manages to cover its plot very tightly. The desire I feel for wanting more is the sort of "end while it's good" that you wish for a serialized story. I would much rather be wanting more than wanting less.

Carrera performing a titjob on an anonymous dick.
The famous gif

The first time I think I encountered Viper GTS was on my ill-spent youth on 4chan. I think it was a gif thread, depicting our protagonist Carrera performing a titjob on the character Ogawa. Here, it's this one:

Ogawa is the main human of the story. He's a bit of a twerp. He wants power and revenge on everyone who has ever bullied him. It's fine, it's a decent motivation I suppose, but I think as the only real human character in the show he's sort of intentionally one-dimensional. When he discovers that his demon summoning has presented him with an incredibly attractive succubus, Carrera, it's not exactly surprising that he dumps his dreams of revenge and instead pursues a night of fun sex. He seems perhaps a bit alarming at first, talking about wanting to kill the people who make his life hell, but he so quickly abandons that train of thought that it comes off as brash naivety.

I'm being a little hard on Ogawa because it's hard not to be, honestly. I do in fact find him rather relatable. I was once a teenager living a masculine life and being endlessly bullied. I understand the maniacal anger of a bullied clever youth, and that desire to do something drastic to change things and escape.

I think it makes quite a bit of sense that his scenes made the rounds so much on 4chan, and also reflect why I personally took a while to soften on my interpretation of him. He really, really comes off as a loser pervert. It's hard for me to not see the parallels in my own past and reflexively dislike him out of shame. But I think there are reasons to treat him more forgivingly, which I'll get into once we talk about our protagonist and her coworkers.

The Devils

Now Carrera, on the other hand, is an A+ succubus who personally gives me a hell of a lot of gender. She is gorgeous, friendly, caring, and also extremely good at her job. She's routinely meeting her quota, while making sure her coworkers/friends/polycule Mercedes and Rati get lots of attention.

I really love seeing how she interacts with the other demons. Everyone has such great chemistry. Rati, the tiniest and most impish of the devils, treats her almost mother-like in some ways. Mercedes may resent Carrera for being so much better at her at collecting, but she still cares about her relationship with her. And Carrera wants to look after Mercedes and help her self-esteem.

I really idolize Carrera's ability to be intimate. She is so good at it, not just physically but really making her clients and friends feel something. She has a caring approach which makes her almost matronly at times. She also can be insatiably Horny! Which like, ain't that a mood.

I think this contrast with Mercedes is interesting. Her biggest flaw is that she has trouble being intimate. When we see her be most intimate with Carrera, it is when Carrera is physically restrained. Mercedes is in general insecure, and often walls herself off in her room where she depression-naps.

Their manager, Alphina, is also a great character. Although we don't see much of him in earnest until episode 3, he has a reserved and calm demeanor that plays well with his whole manager aesthetic. I can easily imagine him hanging up cute motivational posters with cats saying "hang in there!" There's a small side comment where Carrera implies he has two dicks, cut to the camera idling on him, trying to read a book and instead being embarrassed by the attention. This pays off later, don't worry. ๐Ÿ˜‰

There's a part with Alphina I really like in part 3. He and one of the head angels get into a tussle which turns into sex. There's a lot of ambiguous consent here, and the scene does appear noncon, but it turns in a direction that i think plays very funny. After he and the angel have sex, she suddenly berates him for not coming to visit often enough. He very obviously feels guilt, and basically pauses sex to ask "wait are you like actually mad i haven't visited in a while". It's incredibly cute, and i do think it paints their particular noncon scene as more of kinkplay between two lovers-at-port.

Devils are built for sex

Like I mentioned in my intro post, a lot of hentai has issues with letting women enjoy sex, leading to a lot of dubious consent and protestations during sex. This is still quite present here, but also since we're dealing with horny succubi we also get to have a lot of times where people do explicitly consent! It's really nice. This series is fun because there's a lot of scenes of girls enjoying each other in both explicitly D/s scenes and more generic fooling around. Magic is a core part of this series, and this extends to interesting new ways for women to explore each otherโ€™s bodies. In one scene, while Mercedes is bullying Carrera, Mercedes engorges her own tail and uses it to fuck Carrera, like some kind of tentacle dick. Personally I think this is pretty hot! I think it's cool when girls have fun with each other using strange and exciting new body parts.

The Angels

You know how Doom has cyberdemons and stuff? Monsters mixed with machines? A bunch of the angel tech is just robocop outfits with wings made of fire.

Two angels, one wearing blue armor and one wearing red, floating in front of a cascade of yellow light. Burning wings sprout from their back.
It's super cool, honestly.

As for their bodies, the angels have pussies and dicks and sometimes both! We'll probably talk about futanari in more depth in another post, but a common aspect of supernatural hentai is women who turn their clitorises into dicks. This is pretty fun if you're into that, and there are many angels who do this! There are also, however, several angels which just have dick-and-balls. As a trans woman I really appreciate this! Sometimes a girl just has a dick! It's chill. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Also there's a scene where Carrera gets fucked while sandwiched by two angels. I just wanted to say that because I'm gay and stupid.

By the way, the bottom of heaven is a big shitty island which they just call, for real, "Dirty Island." It's incredibly funny. One of the things I really appreciate about this series is that it is just genuinely cute and funny sometimes. The writing is fun and knows how to take itself the right amount of serious.

Profane intimacy

Earlier I mentioned that my first introduction to this hentai was through 4chan, and I think there's a very particular interpretation of events that could be seen in a very incel-like manner.

Earlier I mentioned how Ogawa summoned Carrera and gave up on revenge after having lots of sex with her. I want to elaborate a bit more on his attitude here, because I think it really lends a lot of innocence to him. When she appears, and offers that she can basically do anything for him, he immediately sits down and thinks deeply about it. He has this quiet, doglike moment - he finally caught the mail truck, and he doesn't know what to do with it. He lands on sex because, when presented choices between "fun sex with hot demon girl" right in front of him, or "money and power that i could use for nebulous revenge" he opts to just try to have a good time.

After having sex with him, Carrera opts to "forget" to collect his soul, in an attempt to lower her rating and help Mercedes's confidence. Instead, this lands her in a heap of trouble, unbeknownst to Ogawa. When she later gets abducted by angels for her theological crimes on earth, Ogawa professes his love for her and is heartbroken by her capture. He does not balk there, however, and ultimately joins the demons in their pursuit into heaven to rescue Carrera. The way he strives feels very genuine, something a little more than being smitten. When he first summoned her he felt out of his depth, unsure, and even a little ashamed. But she not only showed him the pleasures of the flesh, but also showed him how to enjoy time with somebody else in an intimate way.

This is where I feel the need to be cautious, because I think this has a danger of veering into incel rhetoric of "needing" sexual intimacy to be powerful, brave, or capable. Viper GTS came out before incel rhetoric really hit its fever pitch, though lots of the seeds were already planted. And Ogawa himself does in fact suffer from many similar delusions of worthiness. When he is unable to successfully summon Carrera a second time, instead receiving Mercedes, he ignores her and prepares to hang himself (which is played for comedy). Mercedes, obviously a devil from hell unconcerned with his mortal life, tries to squeeze the soul out of him by offering a sexual encounter. They do some public petplay in the woods and he fucks her, feeling more powerful in the process. He is honestly at his most obnoxious here.

This is the middle of his arc, though. He starts as an angry recluse, wanting revenge and vengeance, then moves to a depressed recluse, desperate for one more shot at a good time. After having that good time, he remains unsatisfied, because even though Mercedes is a good sexual partner, she doesn't offer the emotional intimacy he received from Carrera.

When he witnesses Carrera be abducted, he summons the other devils, trying to find a way to rescue her. Rati leaves immediately, surprising him with her determination. Alphina shows up, and after explaining the whole situation, tells Ogawa that they will solve the problem and that he is unneeded.

This is the point where Ogawa finally undertakes his transformation into a likeable character. It is like all the pieces are finally fitting together. He sees everyone worried about Carrera, thinks about what he likes about her, and thinks about how ultimately she is in this mess because he re-summoned her. And he decides to pledge his soul in exchange for the ability to join the devils in their rescue of her.

What we see in Ogawa's arc is the development of an angry recluse into a nobler dude. Ogawa: Become Normal. It takes him a while to get there, and certainly it is hard not to cringe at the way he acts. At first he wants power, and revenge. Then he wants sex, and to feel good. But finally, he wants to be noble, and prove himself. He tries using sex twice to solve his feelings of worthlessness, and it goes nowhere. But intimacy, bravery, and cooperation are what eventually give him a sense of worth.

When he sees her next, he doesn't even care about sex, asking if she's alright before finally fainting from the strain of their journey. In his unconscious moments, he monologues about the path of his life.

I don't want to spend a life consumed by hatred and bored all the time. I finally lived for something greater in the end. Falling in love was so incredible, and it transformed me forever. I even got a chance to do my best for my love.

Damn dude. Ain't that the fuckinโ€™ truth. Ending a three-part OVA series about devils and sex and angels with a dude talking about how love is the most important thing in life, and how being there for your loved ones is the best feeling in the world? That's good shit. This moment feels so sincere and positive, that it really seals the tone of the series to me. It's not just about horniness, but about the value of intimacy.

There's one more cute sex scene at the end where everyone is domestic, and it's a very cute epilogue. The polycule has decided to move to the mortal plane, so Carrera can spend time with Ogawa until he gets old and gives up his soul to her. Which I mean, they're immortal, so on the grand scale of thing that's probably not too long. If you like seeing devil girls wearing aprons, I have great news for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

So do I recommend this one?

Yes, absolutely.

The only caveat I'll make is to provide a content warning for the eventual noncon between the angels and devils in part three. It's basically the plot of the whole episode. It's all very fantastical and felt fairly mild to me as a whole, but your mileage may vary.

Despite that, Viper GTS is currently my #1 hentai recommendation, and for good reason. It has a lovable cast of characters, great designs, fun world building, and ends on a really nice note! There's lots of magic and supernatural elements, and it rolls it all up into a great little adventure with wonderful sex and a very enjoyable plot.
